It’s a gorgeous day in Toks and it’s Friiiiiday so you know what that means: Fantastic parties and some songs that have the pleasure of gracing this page. Yeah, I really did just say that. People I really am not doing too well with this New Year’s resolution of weekly updates am I? A new post has been long overdue, just seems as if I’ve somehow misplaced my mojo, so I’ll fake it til you get off on some of these hot tracks 😉
First up a hot new party “Fucking Fridays” – I kid you not, that really is the name….. well it gets straight to the point doesn’t it? Brilliant. FF makes it’s grand debut tonight at Tokyo Salon where djs Diego, Eiko, Adam et moi will have you, well, whatever you do when you can’t contain your excitement, dance? Jump around? Or as I do, head bang? So come have a [insert blatant product placement Grand Marnier cocktail] with me and have a Fantastic Fucking Friday Fantasy come true.
Despite myself I really like this song. Pitbull is so oversaturated that I thought twice before clicking, but when I saw it was Benny Benassi I knew the beat would be sick. Less vocals would have suited me better so I can’t wait for new remixes of it.
Benny Bennassi ft Pitbull – Put it on me ( DJ Real Juicy Quick Edit)
So the last post I mistakenly wrote that Mord Fustang’s “Lick the Rainbow” was Lost in Space (Feed Me Remix) by Deadmau5. A very good friend pointed it out to me and I got confirmation over by Vacay Wave. ごめんね. I thought I’d repost because it’s oh so good.
Mord Fustang – Lick the Rainbow
Wippenberg – Pong (Wideboys Club remix)
And one of my DJ crush’s mix of Katy Perry’s latest.
Katy Perry – Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F) (Laidback Luke bootleg)
See you tonight at FF x
My God, isn’t this pic just frikkin awesome? Think of it as a post Valentine gift from me <3.
I’m sure by now you’ve all heard Lady Gaga’s new single “Born this Way”, from her upcoming album which is probably the most anticipated album of 2011. I assure you, it will be dissected and critiqued ad nauseum, but that won’t stop me from adding my 2 cents.
So, does it work? Honestly, I got a bit bored the first 20 secs in. I read someone tweet “it already sounds like a tired David Guetta throwaway” and I found myself chuckling in agreement. I suspect “Born this Way” won’t age as gracefully as some of her other songs BUT I did feel the same way the first time I heard Paparazzi, so it still is early days.
Inevitably, when you’re as famous as Gaga, you will be compared to other singers. Remember the whole Christina Aguilera debacle? Yeah, I know Christina who? And there’s also the whole Grace Jones‘ outrageous style copied, blah, blah, let’s get back to the music. (Love you Grace Jones!) Obviously, the great queen Madge is the icon most pointed to. “Born This Way” is eerily evocative of Madonna’s “Express Yourself” + (insert whatever here) since its premiere. Not that this is necessarily tragic BUT if you’re going to hype your song as the new gay anthem (that could dethrone “I Will Survive“) then ehhh, it doesn’t quite work in that sense.
The message, on the other hand, does work. One of the reasons I loved Gaga is because she’s always been an outspoken advocate for gay rights. I wouldn’t say this is the ultimate gay anthem, more an anthem for all minorities. The lyrics are honest, she knows how to create a solid pop song with a big hook. Until the music video, or the next single drops, “Born This Way” will be played to death in clubs and will be belted out at gay pride parades throughout the year. Nichome anyone?
What do you think? Any anthems you’d like me to post? Leave your comments below.
I can’t believe I let this happen again. This has been probably the 3rd year in a row that I’ve vowed to go see the Scissor Sisters in action and once again, I can’t go. I even led the charge about 4 months ago when I heard they were coming. They’re performing tonight at Zepp Tokyo and tomorrow night at Gan-Ban @ Ageha which just so happens to be the same night that Hello Kl!tty will be spinning at Ninja (Die Antwoord) @ Trump Room (but more about that later).
The Sisters and I have a history. Listening to their first self-titled album and “Ta-Dah” helped get me through some low times when I first moved to Tokyo. My poor ex-housemate would hear songs like “Return to Oz” and “Get it Get it” on loop every night without fail (smile Mel ;)) To say that I am sorely disappointed to miss them would be an understatement. I fear I’ll just go and wallow in my self-pity while I watch vids on their Vevo.
Enjoy these remixes of their latest album”Night Work”
And an oldie but no doubt a banger
Scissor Sisters – Kiss you off (Mr. Oizo remix)
Hmmm, I think I might just play that last one on Thursday… Hopefully I’ll see you when you’re back in Toks again soon. Kl!ttytronic x
I have a fever. And not the good kind that Peggy Lee sings about. It seems that I’ve gotten what’s been going around Tokyo for the past couple of weeks.
Rest assured though, while hopped up on meds and sipping on my juice box I still posted some songs that ironically popped up while listening to my iPod. Have a healthy dose of these sick tracks… If you’ll pardon the pun.
If Deadmau5 and Justice had a baby, it would be Wolfgang Gartner. I mean, with a name like Wolfgang, how could you possibly not be destined for greatness? (Note to self: Change name to Wolfgang Van Guetta…). Anywho, Wolfgang just yesterday debuted his music video to Illmerica. He posted on his facebook that it’s a “nice little trip through American history with some crazy graphics, if you pay close attention there is some funny stuff in there. . .” And right he is as I’ve watched it about a dozen times since yesterday, you see something new each time and it doesn’t hurt that the track is addictive.
Here’s a mash-up of Justice vs. Wolfgang Gartner – Illmerica Are Your Friends (Steve Camp Mashup)
And finally, Crookers is just what the doctor ordered
Crookers vs Miike Snow – Remedy (Magik Johnson Vocal mix)
Well this blows. My laptop won’t turn on and I’ve never met anything I couldn’t turn on *wink wink nudge nudge. How am I to stick to a new year’s resolution of keeping a blog without a functioning computer? On the plus side, it’s Friday and the weather looks fantastic outside. So in the hopes of my beloved just going through the Lazurus Syndrome, why not join me as I dance around the apartment listening to these tracks?
My spirits are always lifted when I hear me some Fake Blood.
I absolutely cannot get enough of Boys Noize, and when AC Slater is thrown into the mix it’s like “Computer, what?”
Deadmau5 saves lives! Did I hear Super Mario spitting fireballs?
Deadmau5 – Limit Break
This was a long time coming. In fact, I decided that if I didn’t start my blog by the new year then I should stop dreaming about it. So here I am, with so many ideas circulating in my head but really not too sure how to start off.
Firstly, the name JanKenBPM. Jan-ken-pon (じゃんけんぽん) is the Japanese version of Rock, Paper, Scissors and is used fairly often to settle any indecision. I kinda used it to decide between WordPress and Blogger (let’s hope my decision was wise). The BPM part comes in because I DJ in Tokyo… 128 bpm and up おねがいします！Electro, House, and I dare say some Dubstep will be thrown into the mix. Really any music that I come across that I just have to write about.
JanKenBPM is a music blog first, but I’ll also be adding events in Tokyo, fashion here and there and dammit whenever I’m craving bacon.
